Common questions
What is Lycana?
A health companion for people living with lupus (SLE), on iPhone, with Android in the works. It tracks how you feel, your medicines and labs, watches for flare patterns, and helps you prepare for appointments — with Luna, a gentle companion, alongside.
Is Lycana a medical device?
No. Lycana is a tracking and informational tool. It does not diagnose, treat, or cure anything. Decisions about your health always belong to you and your rheumatologist.
Where does my health data live?
On your phone. Everything — symptoms, medicines, labs, health data, even the model that predicts your flares — is kept on the device, in the iPhone's Keychain and a local database that only Lycana can open. If you add a home-screen widget, the few lines it shows — your latest Luna note and your flare-risk summary — are also kept in plain text in a small store the widget can read. We run no servers, there is no cloud sync and no account. One caveat worth knowing: your phone's own backup can include app data. On iPhone you can switch Lycana off individually in your iCloud settings; on Android the backup control is device-wide, so it is not something you can turn off for Lycana alone. And a backup made to a computer with Finder or Apple Devices is not encrypted at all unless you tick 'Encrypt local backup', which would leave a copy of your record in plain form on that computer. Those backups are your OS, not us, but they do mean a copy can leave the phone. Uninstalling does not reliably erase anything either, and some data may be offered back if you reinstall — so if you want it gone, use Health → Privacy & export → Account → Delete Account before you delete the app. That clears what is on the phone; a copy already inside a device backup goes only when you remove that backup.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login — download the app and start. Setup does ask for your first name and a few details that shape your schedule and risk model (date of birth, sex, ethnicity), and there is an optional email field in your profile. All of it is kept on the device and never sent to us; none of it creates an account anywhere.
How does flare prediction work?
Lycana scores each day on your device from your own check-ins, wearable trends and lab results, and shows which signals moved the score. Your wearable readings are compared against your own normal; symptoms and labs are weighed by fixed rules. It is a transparent scoring model, not one that trains itself on your feedback — and it is not a diagnosis.
What does Lycana read from my health app?
With your permission: heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, steps, blood oxygen and skin temperature — from Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android. It is kept with the rest of your record on the device and never sent to us — there is no server of ours for it to go to.
Who is Luna?
Luna is the companion inside Lycana. She runs entirely on your phone and reads your own record — symptoms, medicines, labs, visits, your profile and any wearable data you have connected — to explain patterns, prepare visit notes, and keep you company on rough days. None of it is sent to us, and she never gives medical advice.
Why does Lycana ask for my location?
Only to fetch the local UV index and weather, which feed the daily heads-up. You can set a location manually instead.
Can I export or delete my data?
Yes. Health → Privacy & export → Data & Privacy → Export Data writes out your medicines, supplements, symptom logs and lab results as CSV or JSON. To erase what is on the device, use Health → Privacy & export → Account → Delete Account.
What does Lycana cost?
$2.99 a month, or $29.99 a year if you'd rather pay annually. New subscribers get a 14-day free trial; Apple grants introductory offers once per subscription group, so it may not apply if you have subscribed before. Both plans renew automatically until you cancel, which you can do any time from your App Store settings. No ads, and your data is never sold to anyone, ever.
